The National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation announced that Great-West Life has agreed to develop financial support for Aboriginal students totaling $1150,000 between 2009-2012. Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life will contribute $50,000 annually over three years to fund bursaries supporting students enrolled in post-secondary studies or training and development programs of at least one-year duration. These bursaries will fill a gap identified by the National Aboriginal Foundation, in financial support available to Aboriginal students interested in upgrading their education or taking part in one or two-year vocational programs.

Scholarship WinnerWe would like to congratulate this year's winning recipient, Angela Severight.

Angela grew up on Cote First Nation in Saskatchewan with her grandparents, Joe and Janet Severight & Mable and Delbert Whitehawk and her father, Hilliard Severight. She has 1 sister and 1 brother. She attended school in the town of Kamsack up to grade 10 (1989) after this time, Cote First Nation built their own school and she completed her high school at Chief Gabriel Cote Education Complex in 1992. She completed her management studies diploma in 2003. She then continued for her bachelor of administration in 2006 and currently finishing in April 2009.

Scholarship Terms of Reference

The Many Nations / Maritime Life Assurance Award
This award was set up in 2004, and has been distributed to two successful applicants.

Background:
This award has been set up by Many Nations Financial Services Ltd. on behalf of one of its suppliers, The Maritime Life Assurance Company. Maritime Life contacted Many Nations Financial Services with an offer of a donation of $10,000 and asked its Board to determine where the donation would be most beneficial. The Board of Many Nations chose the First Nations University of Canada as the recipient of the donation.

The award is intended to encourage Aboriginal students to choose careers in areas of Administration with an emphasis on Finance and Accounting. The award is $2,000/year and is offered for 5 years.

  • Total value of donation: $10,000

  • Frequency: Annually
  • Deadline: 28 February
Guidelines for granting award:
  • When considering eligible applications, the Scholarship Committee is asked to consider commitment to career area and financial need of prime importance.
  • Preference will be given to students in the following order:
    • 1st Choice: 3rd or 4th year students in Faculty of Administration
    • 2nd Choice: 1st or 2nd year students in Faculty of Administration
    • 3rd Choice: Pre-Administration students
Eligibility of Students:
  • Applicants must be registered students of the First Nations University of Canada
  • Applicants must be registered in at least 9 credit hours in the semester during which they apply for the award
  • Applicants must be Aboriginal (Treaty Indian, Non-status Indian, Métis, or Inuit)
  • Applicants must be in the Faculty of Administration, with preference going to students majoring in Finance or Accounting.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 48 credit hours and have a 65% GPA overall.
Application package:
In addition to, or as part of, the application form, applicants are asked to submit:
  • A typed cover letter, indicating his/her interest in and future plans for a career in Administration (preferably Finance and Accounting); the cover letter should also indicate financial need.
  • A reference letter from one of their professors to support the application and indicating the student's desire to work in a career in Finance or Accounting
  • A budget form which indicates financial need
  • Completed program sheet (requirement for all scholarship applications)
  • Application deadline: 28 February
Responsibilities of First Nations University of Canada
In accepting this award, the First Nations University of Canada agrees to:
  • Provide Many Nations Financial Services and/or Maritime Life with the name and biography of the award recipient each year;
  • Provide Maritime Life with a First Nations University of Canada Annual Report for the years that the award is given;
  • Invite representative(s) from Many Nations to the annual First Nations University of Canada Awards Tea.

Note:
(1) If, in the opinion of the University, it becomes no longer practical or possible to use this gift for the originally specified purpose, (for example, if a program to which it relates is restructured or discontinued), the University will seek the written consent of the donor to redirect the gift to a new purpose. If the donor cannot be traced, the Board of Governors will redirect the gift towards a new purpose as close as possible to the original intent of the donor.

(2) Eligibility requirements are subject to reasonable changes by the donor at any time, providing such changes are communicated to the University one year prior to the next award being made.
